There are gestures that exist only for the person making them. A small dance while cooking. A pattern traced on a fogged window. The way a hand keeps time with a song no one else can hear.
They do not ask to become achievements. They are closer to a surplus of life: a moment when being here is enough reason to move.
The freedom to be unfinished
Play gives us a temporary release from the demand to be good at something. A movement can be awkward and still be pleasurable. A drawing can be unrecognizable and still be worth making. We discover what an action feels like before deciding what it means.
This freedom becomes rarer when every activity is imagined as a skill to develop or a result to share. The audience can arrive in our minds before we have even begun.
A private kind of beauty
Some things grow more intimate when they remain unrecorded. A joke between friends. The peculiar choreography of a shared kitchen. A song sung badly, but with feeling.
Perhaps not everything needs to become an object in the world. Some things can remain a way of being in it.
What will you notice differently today?
